Buying an air-cooled 911: five things we check first

Air-cooled 911 prices mean a bad car can cost more to fix than to buy. These are the five things we look at before anything else.
1. The front pan and battery boxes
Lift the carpet in the front luggage compartment. Fresh underseal or new carpet in a clean car is a reason to look harder.
2. Kidney bowls
The areas behind the rear wheels trap water. Look from underneath with a torch.
3. Oil leaks and smoke
Every 911 leaks a little. A fresh, clean engine bay is sometimes more worrying than a dusty one.
4. Heat exchangers
Expensive to replace and often ignored. Ask when they were last changed.
5. The paperwork
Numbers should match the documents. If they do not, find out why before you fall in love.
